Rotary Club of Roundhay Delivers Clean Water Through International Partnership
The Rotary Club of Roundhay Leeds is proud to support international projects that create lasting change, and a recent clean water and sanitation project in Ghana demonstrates just how powerful Rotary collaboration can be.
Through a joint effort involving Roundhay Rotary Club, fellow Rotary clubs, and delivery partner Ghana Outlook, a new borehole has been completed in the rural community of Maasegon in northern Ghana. For residents who previously relied on unsafe and distant water sources, access to clean, reliable water is now transforming daily life.
Before the project, women and children spent hours each day collecting water from streams and shallow dug-outs, often contaminated and shared with animals. This affected health, education, and livelihoods. Thanks to Rotary’s focus on Water and Sanitation, the community now has a protected, treated water supply close to home, improving wellbeing and reducing the risk of water-borne illness.
The contribution from the Rotary Club of Roundhay formed part of a wider Rotary partnership, demonstrating how clubs working together can achieve far more than acting alone. Funds raised locally in Roundhay, North Leeds and West Yorkshire — including through Rotary fundraising events — were channelled into a project with real, measurable impact.
Working with Ghana Outlook, local leaders and residents were involved throughout the process to ensure long-term sustainability. Training and community ownership are helping to protect the borehole and maintain it for future generations, aligning with Rotary’s commitment to responsible international service rather than short-term aid.
The benefits are already clear. Children can attend school on time. Families no longer need to budget for paid water from distant sources. Elderly and vulnerable residents can safely collect water without risking injury. Clean water is not just a basic necessity — it is the foundation for education, health, and economic opportunity.
For the Roundhay Rotary Club, this project reflects the Rotary principle of Service Above Self, applied both locally and globally. While members continue to support community projects in Leeds, initiatives like this Ghana water project show how Rotary clubs can extend their reach far beyond their own neighbourhoods.
By supporting international Rotary projects, Roundhay Rotary is helping to deliver sustainable solutions, strengthen communities, and prove that when Rotary clubs collaborate, meaningful change follows.
