Community projects
For over a century, Rotarians have placed ‘Service Above Self’. Through their commitment to community service, Rotarians enrich the very communities they call home. The projects, diverse as the Rotary clubs that champion them, cater to specific community needs. We at the Roundhay club are no exception. We dedicate our volunteering time to regular community initiatives such as the Stroke Support Club in Oakwood, as well as supporting other one-off projects.
Stroke Support Club
Stroke Support Club Every other Thursday, members and their partners donate their time to the Oakwood Stroke Support Club.
Stroke Support Clubs are organisations where people who have survived a stroke or those who are caring for someone who has suffered a stroke come together to talk about their experiences and needs.
Talks by experts in this and other fields are arranged to make the group sessions interesting and engaging. The Rotarian volunteers help with setting up the venue and serving refreshments.
Kids Out
Kids Out takes disadvantaged children across the UK on a fun day out, whether that’s a trip to the theatre or a day at a theme park. The first National Rotary KidsOut Day took place in 1990 and since then it has turned into the biggest single outing for disadvantaged children in the UK. With more than 18,000 children participating in 2023, the National Day Out is run in conjunction with Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland with more than 10,000 Rotarians volunteering on the day at over 100 venues.

Desert Island Disc
Spearheaded by Rotarians Jill and Scott, the ‘Desert Island Discs’ project sees Roundhay Rotarians visiting local care homes where they talk to residents and listen to their stories. During the conversations, the residents talk about their lives, interests and any music that holds special memories for them. Preparations are then made to get the chosen songs ready to play to the residents at a follow up visit. It’s also an opportunity for the residents to learn a little bit more about each other as their life stories are retold.
CATCH (Community Action To Create Hope)
The passion of Roundhay Rotarian Jean, CATCH is a registered charity in Harehills, Leeds, where young people are helped to reach their full potential by ensuring they have access to the tools and resources they need. CATCH believes greatness exists in every child, and through the power of positive mentorship, you can change a young person’s trajectory for a lifetime. The Rotary Club of Roundhay is privileged to support opportunities to help them unlock that potential. CATCH’s passion for their mission grows with every young person who overcomes an obstacle, achieves success in school, discovers their voice, and unlocks their greatness. At the colourful headquarters in Harehills, Leeds CATCH has created a safe space for the whole community, but in particular for young people. They have a popular youth programme with over 1000 children accessing their activities. www.catchleeds.org
