President Gillian Hayward thanked Bob for coming to speak to us and presented him with a cheque to the Foundation of £1,750
Those unable to attend the Charter Dinner to celebrate 55 years of the Rotary Club of Roundhay missed a treat.
It was very gratifying to be able to welcome a substantial number of guests from our mother club, the Rotary Club of Leeds, and others from Leeds Elmete, Aireborough, Bradford West and Otley Chevin.
Thanks are due to District Governor Nominee Robert Morphet for a most gracious toast to our Club and kind words about the success of our Sensory Garden project at John Jameson school. Thanks also to our guest speaker Bob Bowman QPM, who told us that he would not be giving us advice, and then proceeded to do precisely that by the example of his life ‘from Council Estate to Buckingham Palace’. Bob told us of bouncing back from failing to get into the Royal Marines by joining the West Yorkshire Police and dedicating himself to serving the community, particularly disadvantaged youth, and latterly as a trustee of the Leeds Rhinos Foundation, harnessing the power of sport to make a lasting, positive impact on individuals' lives.
Chef Ian Harrison is to be congratulated on the food, and I’d like to add my personal thanks to Joan for impressing my guests by serving me a huge chocolate pudding that had not featured on the menu.
